As I am writing this blog post, Minnesota State Representative Erin Maye Quade (DFL-Apple Valley) is leading a sit in on the Minnesota House of Representatives floor in an effort to convince the Republican-controlled state house to bring up proposed gun control legislation for votes:
Like Americans all across the country, Minnesotans are demanding common-sense gun control and gun safety measures. I applaud Maye Quade for her courageous act of leadership, although I can't really write a blog post about the sit-in without mentioning how Maye Quade has done a fantastic job using social media to promote her cause. Maye Quade posted several gun violence stories on Twitter, and here's a few of them:18 hours later, @ErinMayeQuade is still on the House floor #mnleg #SitInSpeakOut #wcco @WCCO pic.twitter.com/hFZEO0esOq— Mary McGuire (@mcguirereports) April 25, 2018

His daughters abuser/stalker/rapist broke into the house when she was 17 years old, dragged her out of bed and tried to take her away with a 12-gauge shotgun on my back. Her Dad got in between us and was shot twice and killed. #SitInSpeakUp pic.twitter.com/9yOVN0Jl4p

In her first term as a Minnesota state legislator, Maye Quade has already earned a reputation as someone who is more than willing to fight for what's right. Maye Quade has been a leader in the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct, and she's now a leader in the movement for stronger gun control laws to reduce gun violence. Progressive leaders like Erin Maye Quade are the future of the Democratic Party, and, if there were thousands more elected officials in this country who are like her, America would be a lot better off.Shelley Joseph-Kordell.
